Why are my social security number, full name and birthdate needed to apply for the Veterans online shopping benefit?

We are required by DoD Instruction 1330.21 to assure that we only provide exchange shopping privileges to authorized customers. We verify your status as an authorized customer through the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS) database. The process requires customers to provide their full social security number, date of birth, and first and last name. VetVerify does not retain your social security number or any portion thereof.
